JIJ, here’s one for you...

Talking one day with this teacher, mother, researcher, from my floor..

- So your hair is blond now i see.
- Yes.
- Blond helps you fit in.
- Excuse me? We are still in the Bronx, are we not?
Do you fit in with your brown hair?
- Then why blond.
- I dyed my hair black for years. Black hair is too good for me.
- How do you mean?
- Never mind.
- So your hair is naturally what?
- Red (not really)
- I have a friend who went to your country once.
- Aha...
- People followed her on the street.
- Did they now? and why is that, i wonder..
- Yes because she had long blond hair, color of gold.
- Gold is cheap in my country (mumbling).
- Beg your pardon?
- That surprises me.
- And girls would rub her locks on their own hair hoping it would...
- But girls in my country don’t show their hair, they’re all hidden in veils.
- Oh yes.
- Yes, they wouldn’t be on the streets either.
- Really?
- Really, in fact after the dark, some come out.
- Only in the dark?
- Only with men pulling them behind. They go into dark alleys…
You’re totally buying this aren’t you…
- …

the worst is when you go to the 7ellak in leb and tell him you want DARK BROWN highlights and you walk out platinum BLONDE with an occasional brown hair here and there (and you have to pay and TIP him for that piece of work too!

OMG Mirvat you rock, I can't believe you actually said that to her. You know I grew up in Canada among Canadians, not Arabs, and while some display a bit of ignorance, most, especially in the bigger cities, are very open to other cultures and don't spew bullshit like Americans do. When I moved to Michigan for my PhD, I was expecting Americans to be the same mindset as Canadians, but I quickly learned what American culture was all about. Aside from ignorance, that fake, Prozak enduced "niceness" that they all exhibit with their overexcited voices and stupid perma smiles... that's why so far I have resisted to apply for jobs in the US, I really want to work in Canada, but I may have to break down and look for work in US soon.

Rouba, i went here to a lebanese one and asked to get rid of the black and go back to brown. i'm now platinum blond. the worst part is that you want to cry and he's so proud of his work. i didn't care much, figured i could shave it off again.

LC, i see you're still awake again. well, all i can say is that they're not all bad. i have good friends who are americans and who don't have this prejudice. but then again new york is different. when i was in syracuse, i had to put up with a lot of crap and it was around 9/11 mind you. i still didn't shut up. not niceness, but ignorance is true. they don't care to learn either and that's what frustrates me. like that woman i was talking to. the same conversation with her happened twice. that's why i got bitchy the second time. but again not all of them are like that.

i agree, i don't like stereotyping or generalizing, i think ignorant people are everywhere, whether it was in lebanon or canada or the states..and mostly it's not intentional. i think with "proper handling", people will learn to accept and embrace other cultures and forget about their preconcieved ideas (e.g. that lebanon is a desert)
